about

The writing and production of “On the Weekend” truly got me through my first high-school breakup, and I say that with absolutely no hesitation. Screaming its lyrics such as “slurring all your words, you swear you’re my savior / it’s men like you that make me a feminist” and “oh so hot but now I’m overheated / and love’s just an excuse to go out on the weekend.” This angry bop calls out an ex for all the many incredibly audacious and perfidious acts he committed during a relationship, doing so in a confident, vengeful pop atmosphere.

lyrics

Lead poisoning in the pipe dream
Smiling and lying through your teeth
And I blamed it all on naivety

Give me ten reasons to go and one reason to stay
And I swear I’ll think about it
Slurring all your words, you swear you’re my savior
It’s men like you who make me a feminist

Oh so generous oh for a degenerate
Used me like a credit card but always gut denied
From you whenever I asked for favor
I asked you if you loved me you said you’d say it later

Take me out, what do you take me for
Keep your eyes on the road, keep your eyes off her
Oh so hot but now I’m overheated
And love’s just an excuse to go out on the weekend

(Oh damn *3
You go down a bottle to bottle up your feelings
Oh damn *3
And love’s just an excuse to go out on the weekend)

Down all the drinks, and lay down the money
Too drunk to know what N-O no means
Alcohol running through your blue bloodstream
And it went all to you cheeks when I asked who’s she

You deserve an Oscar for all the parts you played
And you deserve the finger for the way you played me
Cause it plays out look like a movie, doesn’t it
Sewed all the red flags to make red carpets

Mourning the dead version of you
With a seance
Love you to death so I’ll come to the funeral
Wearing neon

You have into one full day to get with her
But your reputation will proceed you longer than my anger
