about
I think the first verse of “Top Fifteen” really encapsulates the toxic (and let’s be honest, annoyingly audacious) ex of the story, with the lyrics, “couldn’t say that I’m the prettiest girl you’ve ever seen with a hundred percent certainty / but that I’m surely in the top fifteen, no less, no worse, but top ten if I’m wearing a skirt.” The song ultimately follows this same bold partner, whose audacity far outweighs his actual character, and does so through an upbeat indie-pop vibe worthy of many intense, windows-down summer car trips.
lyrics
Said you
Couldn’t say that I’m the prettiest girl you’ve ever seen
With a hundred percent certainty
But that I’m surely in the top fifteen
No less no worse, but top ten if I’m wearing a skirt
Showed you my favorite song in the car
Claimed you could write better than it if you tried
You’ve never even picked up a guitar
I’m sure it’d sell though, cause with you, people buy it all the time
We’re like a piece of art in a museum
That I I’m having trouble interpreting
A bunch of violent strokes laid out on a canvas
But I’m sure it has to mean something
Something, something
It has to mean, it has to mean
Something, something
I’m some display in a gallery
That I you’re having trouble interpreting
But not all art is supposed to make sense completely
But just swear it made feel you something
Something, something
You have to feel, tell me feel
Something, something
Saw you up close with some girl in the bar
Begged you not to leave me for her
Told me not to worry ‘bout cheating
Cause you asked, but she declined your offer
And when I asked you if you loved me
You said that love was just a marketing technique
But that I fit into your five year plan
And that your parents like me
Na na na na na na na na na na
You take a step back to see the whole canvas
Na na na na na na na na na na
You claimed the shapes weren’t even logical
Na na na na na na na na na na
And when I asked why you came
Na na na na na na na na na na
You said cause you’re in an intellectual
